Information for Producers

  • Avian Influenza Brochure
    • What are the signs of avian influenza in birds?
      • Decrease in water consumption.
      • Decrease in egg production.
      • Soft-shelled or misshapen eggs.
      • Swelling of the head, eyelids, comb, and wattles.
      • Purple discoloration of the wattles, combs, and legs.
      • Respiratory signs: coughing, sneezing, respiratory distress.
      • Unstable coordination.
      • Sudden death.
    • Reporting Sick Birds
      • Report sick birds to NDA at 402-471-2351 and the USDA at 866-536-7593.
  • Testing for Avian Influenza:
    • How do I test for avian influenza?
      • Call 402-471-2351 to schedule a test. An AI Inspector will come to your premises and take swabs. In most cases, no more than 30 birds will be tested. The birds are not harmed as the vent is swabbed. Quick and painless, the average time spent on each one of the premises is one hour or less.
      • Swabs are then sent to the University of Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Center for testing. A positive test will result in immediate contact with the producer. All test results are usually available within a week and mailed to the producer.
